Open Your Heart to a Csángó Child!

If you are passionate about helping people, promoting children’s education, and protecting cultural heritage, join us!

The Csángó Hungarians, living primarily in eastern Romania, have passed on their language and culture over many centuries. Today, their dialects and traditions are in danger of disappearing.

Please support our efforts to help Csángó children to receive a better education, celebrate their language and traditions, reach for their dreams, and inspire their communities.

We are a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit organization and your tax-deductible charitable donation to our foundation will go directly toward funding our current initiatives. Thank you!

Hungarian Culture Day 2015

January 22 is the Day of Hungarian Culture, celebrated since 1989. This year’s celebration in the Transylvanian city of Marosvásárhely (Târgu Mureș) includes a strong focus on Csángó culture.

Accomplishment Highlight

In 2014, through our signature initiative TEACH we provided nearly $134,000 in funding to a wide range of educational and cultural programs benefiting Csángó students from rural Romania. Thanks to our direct relationships with community organizations, teachers and students, we are able to better understand and meet the specific needs of the communities we serve. 2014 was an excellent year for us in terms of accomplishing the goals we set out to meet – thanks in great part to those who generously support our work. These successes wouldn’t be possible without the generosity of our supporters. We hope that you will consider supporting our initiatives. With your contribution we look forward to making 2015 even better! Every little bit counts, so please consider a $25, $50 or a $100 donation to our foundation. Thank you!

Happy New Year!

We wish a happy and successful new year to all our students, teachers, donors and supporters!

We look forward to our continued work together in 2015 to put a high-quality, culturally authentic education within the reach of even higher numbers of talented and dedicated students. Mighty oaks from little acorns grow.

Boldog, eredményes új évet kívánunk minden kedves pedagógusnak, diáknak, valamint lelkes támogatóinknak, akik segítsége nélkül nem érhetnénk el céljainkat.

Happy Holidays!

Békés, boldog karácsonyi ünnepeket kíván a Pillangó Alapítvány!

St. Nicholas’ Day

Happy St. Nicholas’ Day to all the students in the Csángó Education Program! Our gratitude to their dedicated teachers without whom the program would not be possible.

Boldog Mikulást kívánunk a Moldvai Csángómagyar Oktatási Programban részt vevő diákoknak. Igazán büszkék lehetnek arra, ahogyan szép anyanyelvüket ápolják és használják. Elismerésünk lelkes oktatóiknak, akik nélkül ezt nem lehetne megvalósítani.

Giving Tuesday 2014

December 2 is Giving Tuesday, a day dedicated to celebrating generosity and giving back. Please support the Pillangó Foundation’s efforts to help Csángó children in rural Romania to receive a better education, preserve their language and traditions, reach for their dreams and inspire their communities. We are a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit organization and your tax-deductible charitable donation to our foundation will go directly toward funding our current education initiatives. Your contribution will allow us to continue implementing and expanding these vital programs that are helping students to succeed in school and beyond. Every little bit counts, so consider a $25, $50 or a $100 donation to our foundation. Making a charitable donation in someone’s name also makes for a compassionate holiday gift. Thank you!

The Pillangó Foundation wishes a joyous Advent Season to all the Csángó students, their families and teachers.

St. Elizabeth’s High School in Gyimesfelsőlok

Saint Elizabeth’s Catholic High School in Gyimesfelsőlok (Lunca de Sus) is turning 20 this September. The school, in the beautiful Gyimes region nestled between Transylvania and Moldova in Romania, was founded in September 1994 by Lajos Berszán to serve the educational needs of the region. The school’s program has grown over the years and now offers native language education from kindergarten to high school. The school’s students are primarily Csángó Hungarians of the Gyimes region. The school is named for St. Elizabeth of Hungary, also known internationally as St. Elizabeth of Thuringia.

The Pillangó Foundation is proud to support Saint Elizabeth’s and extends its congratulations to the school on this significant achievement, and wishes its past, present and future students much success.

Ilona Nyisztor

We warmly congratulate Csángó folk singer Ilona Nyisztor on her receipt of the Prize for the Future of Europes Children. Ilona Nyisztor has been working devotedly in the Csángó Education Program of Moldova for years teaching the children of the village of Pusztina (Pustiana) the beautiful Hungarian songs and dances of their ancestors. The children perform at many festivals every year, including the yearly Csiperó festival in Kecskemét, Hungary. The festival is a showcase of folk music and dance performed by children and teenagers from many different countries. Here is a clip of the children performing at the 2014 festival (due to rain, the festivities had to be moved indoors to a school gym) and here is a short article (in Hungarian) about the award ceremony honoring Ilona Nyisztor, with many pictures.
